The Knight's Blog

This blog describes the quest of a Knight to be, well, how he becomes a knight. The mission is not accomplished yet, but there is enough time in the world to achieve the goal in the end.

Archery

While archery is fun, I realized it takes a LOT of time and commitment to become a good archer. A gold medal at olympic games is far out of my reach, if I'm honest. But is becoming a knight out of my reach, then, too?

I don't think so. Doing something only to be honoured isn't honourable after all. So maybe I started this quest with wrong assumptions. I need a quest which really fits into my life, get's all my attention and devotion. Need to look further.

Honour

I guess to find out what I need to do to become a knight, I need to find a way to prove honour. That's what it all comes down to, really. But what is honour? You can get knighthood in the Netherlands if you win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. I guess it's really only a consolation gift to be knighted in the Netherlands instead of by the real Queen Elisabeth. So, the latter is what I'm going to go for.

Olympic Games sound good, though. 2012 Olympic Games are in London, and what fits better? Maybe I'll win a gold medal there and do something honourable with my publicity then. I started training archery.

Am I serious?

Some people asked me if I'm really serious about this. Do I really want to become a knight? Well, yes, of course I'm serious about that. But do I really think that I'll ever make it? Well, how can I know? I'm serious about trying my best. This is not a joke blog. This blog is here to document my thoughts on this quest, to show my progress (ok, there is not much to show yet, but I only just started), and maybe to entertain you watching me becoming a knight. If you don't believe that I can ever do it, you can still watch me failing. Or you can fail to watch me, because I'm making it?

I found a description on Wikipedia on how to become a knight. It involves good manners (I have those, my parents were good at this) and riding horses. I was on horseback once, and I didn't fall off, but I think I'll have to do some work on this, maybe. Unfortunetaly, the hints are all for the middle age, not for today.

But there is more information, for example a list of knights in the different orders. An extra page on the british hohours system lists the orders. I can see that not only Barons and Lords are knighted, but also a lot of popular musicians, actors and even directors. I mean, that does not sound like an impossible mission, does it? Check the lists and find someone extraordinary to compare to!

The Knight To Be

I want to be a knight

I want to be a knight. Yes, I'm serious. I have achieved quite a few things in my life so far, and most of my goals sounded far fetched in the beginning. But I achieved them all. Now I'm looking for new quests in my life, maybe one that's not so quickly to finish. And so the idea was born: I want to be a knight. All, with sword and King (or Queen) and a long table with candles, ladies, maybe even dragons, who knows?

Yes, actually, who knows? Does anyone have an idea of how to become a knight? Is there something like a quest description or so? If you happen to know something about it, please let me know and publish a comment. I will keep you updated about my progression here, in the Knight's Blog.

Sincerely,
The Knight To Be
